Like many people my family received our stimulus check last year.

Now that tax time is coming up, how is this stimulus check going to be accounted for on the taxes. And more importantly, is it going be taken right off of the refund for 2008, or simply added in as part of our income.

Excuse if the question is a little confusing. I guess the best way to ask is simply,

"so, I had a stimulus refund, how will it affect my taxes this year."

It does affect my refund, I ran the numbers both ways. with the stimulas check and without. the difference is almost $300 difference in the amount of the refund I will be getting.

I just filed my taxes today, and it asked me specifically how much I got from the stimulus which was $360.00, yet it didn't effect anything about my return.
Maybe its just a reinsurance thing.

Russian officer guilty of betraying spy ring in US (AP)

MOSCOW ? A senior Russian intelligence officer convicted of working for the United States fled Russia on a train just before the Americans busted his ring of 10 Russian sleeper agents.

Details of Col. Alexander Poteyev's quick escape and farewell text message to his wife ? asking her to "try to take it calmly" ? were among evidence produced by the court Monday as it found him guilty in absentia of high treason and desertion.

Pinup spy Anna Chapman, one of the 10 agents deported from the U.S. in July, testified during the closed trial that only Poteyev could have provided the information that led to their arrest last summer, Russian news agencies reported, citing a summary of the evidence read by the judge as he issued his ruling.

Chapman testified that she was caught after an undercover U.S. agent contacted her using a code that only Poteyev and her personal handler knew, the reports said. She said she immediately felt during the meeting that something was wrong and called her handler in Moscow, who confirmed her suspicions. Chapman and others were arrested shortly after.

The agents, who were arrested a year ago Monday, were deported in exchange for four suspected Western agents who had been imprisoned in Russia. It was the biggest spy swap since the Cold War.

The Moscow military court sentenced the 59-year-old colonel to 25 years in prison and also stripped him of his rank and state medals.

The court said Poteyev got word that the agents were being rounded up in the U.S. and was in such a hurry to leave Russia that he rushed out of a meeting at intelligence headquarters, the Interfax news agency reported. It said Poteyev fled to Belarus, crossed the border into Ukraine and then moved west to Germany and, finally, on to the United States using a passport in another person's name.

He had no time to say goodbye to his wife and later bid his farewells in a text message: "Mary, try to take this calmly. I'm leaving not for some time, but forever. I didn't want to, but I had to. I will start my life from scratch and will try to help the children."

Poteyev's grown son and daughter reportedly have been living in the United States for years.

His court-appointed lawyer, Andrei Kucherov, said Poteyev's wife believes he is innocent and wants to join him in the U.S.

Mikhail Lyubimov, a veteran Soviet spy, described the court's ruling against Poteyev as "symbolic."

"He must be rubbing his hands together and laughing at that together with his family somewhere in the U.S." Lyubimov said, according to Interfax.

The court said Poteyev had overseen the Russian sleeper agents in the U.S. as deputy head of the "S" department of Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service.

In addition to Chapman, other agents also confirmed that only he had access to the sensitive information that allowed the U.S. authorities to apprehend them, the RIA-Novosti news agency said.

The court said Poteyev had begun working for American intelligence around 1999-2000 ? betraying the agents, their means of communication and financial information. It said Poteyev had sought to hamper the agents' work by forcing them to meet in places that were unsafe and providing them with inferior equipment.

The Russian spies were given a hero's welcome when they returned home, and President Dmitry Medvedev bestowed them with the nation's highest awards in October.

Russia's Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, a 16-year veteran of the KGB, sang patriotic songs with the spies to celebrate their return. Putin warned in December that traitors come to a bad end and "whatever equivalent of 30 pieces of silver they get, it will get stuck in their throats."

Unlike other members of the spy ring who have stayed out of the limelight, Chapman has basked in the attention. She has stripped down to lingerie for a photo shoot by the Russian edition of Maxim under the caption "For Your Eyes Only," become the new celebrity face of a Moscow bank, joined the leadership of the youth wing of the main pro-Kremlin political party and hosted a TV program.

How the West May Flood: Winter's Long, Long Reach (Time.com)

First came the Mississippi. Then the Missouri. Now the nation's West waits as the mountain snowpack perches at 300% more than average and flood watches blanket the region.

With minor flooding already hampering life in Montana, Wyoming and Utah, a sudden spike of warm temperature will send even more melting snow rushing into already filling rivers throughout the Rockies, Cascades and Sierras. "It's kind of like a temperature time bomb," says Pat McGrane, hydrologist for the Bureau of Reclamation. "But so far, so good. We have lucked out." (Lightbox: Storm Wreckage in Joplin.)

In a typical year, warm weather starts in May, gradually melting the mountain snow. And as farmers irrigate with reservoir water, river levels stay manageable. But record rainfalls throughout the Northwest equate to historic snowpack levels, no need for irrigation to tap into the surplus and dwindling wiggle room to store any deluge of melting snow in the largest water event since 1997. A string of hot weather, McGrane says, means the entire region "could be in big trouble."

The Army Corps of Engineers has already given out one million sandbags in one month in western Montana and minor floods continue to breach levies, including one that spilled over the Clark Fork River into Plains, Mont., says Patricia Graesser, the Corps' Northwest spokesperson.

Operating in an "active flood fight for over a month," the Corps has repaired levies throughout eastern Washington, Idaho and Montana, including Missoula proper. In northern Idaho, the Lake Pond Oreille region receives special attention as the lake and associated rivers run above flood stage. The Corps even raised up an existing dam on Hayden Lake. Christy Jones, who coordinates emergency response for the Corps, says western Wyoming has dealt with minor flooding and the National Guard helped sandbag along the North Platte River near Casper. With the chances for sudden spikes in temperature greater farther to the east, the scare of "big runoffs that go outside the banks" increases too, says Scott Pattee, water supply specialist for the Natural Resource Conservation Service. That worry spreads south to Utah and the Central Valley of California. James Brotherton, meteorologist with the National Weather Service, says he expects another surge in temperatures - over 70 degrees above 8,000 feet in elevation and 100 degrees in the low-lying Central Valley - this week, "likely melting off the majority of remaining snowpack and possibly causing some renewed flooding."

With rivers likely peaking this week, crews have a bit of space left in reservoirs, says John Johannis, chief of the water management section for the Corps in the Sacramento district. "It will be a balancing act and we will control filling to avoid any uncontrolled spills," he says. "Right now we are cautiously optimistic." Sacramento - rated the nation's second most susceptible city for flooding behind New Orleans - remains safe for now, Johannis says, and his main concern lies in the San Joaquin area. "Even last week we showed increases in snow water content," he says.

There are consequences, however, even to effective flood control. In eastern Washington, the Grand Coulee Dam - one of the world's largest concrete structures at 500 feet tall and a mile wide - holds the key for Washington and Portland, Oregon, where rivers now surge at over half a million cubic feet per second. As the Snake River Basin fills up, crews have dealt with the excess flow into the Grand Coulee reservoir - currently with 40 feet of space left - by purposefully sending water through the spillways, not the power plant.

This may be great news for flooding fears, but it isn't for the ecology. As the water mixes with air it fills with nitrogen gas bubbles, threatening native salmon heading for the Pacific Ocean, McGrane says. A commercial fish farm immediately downstream of the dam loses up to 100,000 steelhead and trout each day in net pens due to the gas, according to a court filing looking to curb the dam's flow. Cooler weather is the only hope to dissipate flooding fears - and to save the fish. "As long as we can continue melting snow [at a slow pace]," Pattee says, "the flooding risks will eventually just kinda go away."

Nowitzki throws 1st pitch for Rangers after jumper (AP)

ARLINGTON, Texas ? NBA champion Dirk Nowitzki carried a basketball with him to the mound before throwing out the first pitch for the Texas Rangers.

With the crowd cheering wildly, Nowitzki showed off his stepback, one-legged jumper to send the ball in the direction of home plate. The MVP of the NBA finals for the Dallas Mavericks then pulled a baseball out of his pocket.

After walking to the back of the mound and kicking up some dirt, Nowitzki delivered with a high leg kick. The ball sailed over the plate, but so high that Texas Rangers standout and Los Angeles Lakers fan Michael Young had to jump out of his crouch and leap while fully extending his glove above his head to make the catch.

"I had a little more work in on the jumper, so I think it was a little more fluent," Nowitzki said. "The only thing I wanted to do on the pitch was not keep it low. Everybody was making fun of me, I can't do the John Wall, who obviously left it very low. I kept it a little high, but it was better than a bounce. ... I thought that was my fastball. That's all I had."

A week earlier, Wall threw a first pitch before a Washington Nationals game that bounced about halfway to the plate.

Nowitzki was still wearing a splint on the middle finger on his left hand that he hurt in Game 1 of the NBA finals that the Mavericks won in six games against the Miami Heat.

His first pitch before the game against the New York Mets came a day before Nowitzki flew home to Germany. But he will have to go home without the NBA championship trophy.

"I don't think (owner Mark) Cuban actually lets it out of his hand anymore," Nowitzki said. "He's been sleeping with it, he's going everywhere with it."

Nowitzki hasn't decided if he will join German national team this summer to help its chances of qualifying for the 2012 Summer Olympics, though he knows he will have to make a decision soon.

"I think I'm going to do some vacation first, and get away from everything," he said. "It's been kind of nonstop obviously after we won it. It's been hard to get some rest, so I'm going to do some vacation, let it go through my mind, and then we'll kind of see how it goes with the lockout. That's part of it."

Nowitzki said there have been some exciting times celebrating since the Mavericks won their first championship June 5, calling the last few weeks the best time of his life. And he's not ready yet to think about next season.

"Coach (Rick) Carlisle is such a freak, he texts us already, 'Get some rest this summer, we've got to repeat,'" Nowitzki said. "I was like 'We just won, can we like get at least two or three weeks to get away a little bit?' He's already fired up for next season. I think everybody else is still kind of in shock and is going to take a couple of weeks to sink in, and we're going to enjoy this."
