Vernon Philander doubtful for New Year?s Test ? Cricket News Roundup ? Part I ? December 21, 2012
South Africa?s promising fast bowler Vernon Philander is a doubtful starter for the first Test against New Zealand, after he picked up a recurring injury.
Philander, 27, sat out the second Test against Australia at the Adelaide Oval earlier this month due to a troublesome left hamstring and sore back. On Thursday, he bowled just five overs in a first class match between Cape Cobras and Lions in Johannesburg, before leaving the field for a treatment.
Though the extent of the right-arm medium pacer?s injury is yet to be determined, it has been reported that he might be sidelined for two weeks, which would mean Philander missing the New Year?s Test against the Black Caps at his home ground, Newlands, starting on January 2.
?MRI scans revealed that Vernon suffered a grade one strain to his left hamstring. Injuries of this type usually have a 10 to 14 day recovery period,? South Africa?s team manager Dr Mohammed Moosajee told media reporters yesterday. ?We will assess the injury as the week progresses, and this will help determine whether his availability for the Test series will be affected. At this point he will not bowl again during the match between the Cobras and Titans - and will only bat if necessary," he added further.
England batsman Jonny Bairstow, who was left out of Thursday?s first T20 International against India at Pune, has returned home early from India due to family reasons.
Bairstow will be unavailable for Saturday?s final T20 encounter against the Men in Blue, having flown to England on Friday morning. The Yorkshire wicketkeeper batsman?s omission came as a surprise to many as the England team management handed the gloves to Somerset?s Jos Buttler yesterday.
"Jonny Bairstow has gone home today from India tour for family reasons," a brief statement from the ECB read.
New Zealand?s newly appointed Brendon McCullum has rued ace pacer Tim Southee?s untimely injury, terming his absence a huge loss ahead the Kiwis? tour to South Africa.
Southee, who was not named in the T20 squad for the three-match series against the Proteas due to paternity leave, has also been ruled out of the Test and one-day leg of the itinerary due to a hand injury. The 24-year-old Northland seamer ruptured ligaments in his right thumb during a domestic match this week, and has been sidelined for two months.
"It's a big loss, Tim's been our number one bowler in Test cricket for the last sort of a while and also in one-day cricket as well. He is a real leader of the attack, so it's going to be a huge loss," said McCullum.
