Some of the Democrats in Congress don?t actually want to fix the legal immigration system, according to Rep. Justin Amash (R-Mich).
Amash was the featured guest at a Wednesday breakfast event hosted by the Leadership Institute, a conservative nonprofit.
?I know for a fact that many Democrats in Congress are opposed to improving the legal immigration system,? Amash said. ?They?re not that interested in it.?
The Congressman said he would vote ?no? on the Gang of Eight?s immigration bill if it passed the Senate and was considered in the House ? but merely because he hasn?t read the proposed legislation yet. He said that any member of Congress who hasn?t read a bill should vote no by default.
During his talk, Amash stressed that party leadership is more difficult in the current Internet age than it was 10-20 years ago. He remarked that although he likes Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-Ohio), he thinks the GOP will eventually shift to younger leadership ? such as Rep. Ra?l Labrador (R-Idaho), Amash?s pick the last time the House voted for Speaker.
But that doesn?t mean Amash is planning to stage a ?House of Cards?-like coup.
?I watch ?House of Cards,?? he joked with the audience, before adding, ?I want to be clear: Again, I like John Boehner. Do I think he?s the most-suited person for modern times or the kind of Republican party we have today? No, but we could do a lot worse.?
Amash said he didn?t want to risk replacing Boehner with someone who might be a much worse leader and noted that party leadership would change ?on its own pace.?
The Congressman also said he was considering a 2014 Senate run, though he hasn?t officially made his decision yet, echoing remarks he made back in March.
?The Senate seat in Michigan is an open seat,? Amash said at the time. ?I definitely will take a good look at it. But I have no plans in the immediate future to announce any campaign. So we got a ways to go, and I want to see how thing play out.?
