Time-Delayed Bait Release Gives Lobster Traps a Greater Haul [Inventions]

Operating a large commercial fishing boat is expensive, and lobster fishermen can only afford to check their sunken traps every three or four days. So Vince Stuart, a Nova Scotian inventor, created the Bait Savour which releases extra bait in the interim, increasing their haul. More »

Apple may ditch Google maps in next version of iOS

17 hrs.

Apple and Google are known to fight on occasion, so we shouldn't be surprised that the two are having a little tiff over maps right now. But let's review what's going on.

As the folks at the Wall Street Journal point out, "the iPhone and Google Maps have seemed like ideal digital bedfellows" ever since they got together in 2007.?The iPhone has relied on Google Maps?? the search engine giant's map service?? in order to keep Apple fanboys and fangirls from getting lost in the real world.

But, based on recent reports, Apple may finally be ready to ditch Google's resources for its own.?According to BGR's Jonathan Geller, iOS 6 ? the next version of Apple's mobile operating system ??will bring 3-D mapping features which use?mapping technology developed by Apple.?The Wall Street Journal explains that the Cupertino-based company may preview iOS 6 during its?annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC)?keynote on June 11.

According to current and former Apple employees who've spoken with the Wall Street Journal, "Apple has been hatching the plan to evict Google Maps from the iPhone for years."?Over time, Apple has "quietly acquired at least three cutting-edge map companies, melding their technology with its own" and begun developing its own proprietary mapping service.

Google isn't standing by idly, of course. The company is holding a press event on June 6?? mere days before Apple's keynote event ? during which Brian McClendon, VP of Google Maps and Google Earth, will show off "the next dimension of Google Maps."

So why is all this back-and-forth going on in the first place? Money, of course.?The Wall Street Journal explains that when?people use maps on their phones, they get served a huge proportion of mobile ads, and that the location-ad slice of the pie will only get bigger. But the Journal also says that mapping is such a key part of the user experience, it would benefit Apple to differentiate by offering mapping services that Google doesn't have.

Want more tech news, silly puns, or amusing links? You'll get plenty of all three if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

93% Marvel's The Avengers

The Avengers is one of the wittiest, action packed and most satisfying installments in the entire Superhero genre. BUT it will not convert anyone with an aversion of big budget super hero movies to the dark side, it has all the elements you hate. But these elements, pulled off by ringmaster Joss Weedon has never been so well deftly executed. The movie succeeds for these three reasons, in this order: A) Performances: Starting with established beloved Iron Man character made iconic by Robert Downey Jr., and aptly giving him a dominant amount of screen time. Then, finally finding a successful Hulk/Bruce Banner in low key and wistful Mark Ruffalo - after 2 weaker Hulk outings (Eric Bana, Edward Norton). Then, casting a charismatic and hateful villain, Loki from Thor, played by Tom Hiddleston. Everyone else, from Samuel Jackson as Nick Fury, Scarlet Johannsen as Black Widow, Chris Hemsworth as Thor and Chris Evans as Captain America are fine, but more than that, they all have something to play as characters and fit into an intricate story, bringing me to:B) Writing: With so many main characters, the bane of such films is that several of them are just meat puppets and are given little to do but wear the uniform and look cool. Here, each and every Avenger has a character with an clear obstacle to play and interesting conflict with each other. The wit is fresh and full of fantastic and natual sounding quips and gags. C) Terrific action sequences: The action sequences are coherent and exciting, I particuarly enjoyed the Johannsen ass kicking scenes. In most recent action films, including Hunger Games, action scenes are incoherent sequences full of jump cuts. The excitement is purely rhythmic, but the action is full of bad continuity and nonsense. Here, if you care about such things, you will find state of the art logical and well staged action, shot in the traditional style. On the down side: A) The overarching plot of Thor's brother Loki trying to destroy earth just because he can, is not interesting. Nor are the armies of robotic silver surfers that descend from heaven to wreak havoc. (Loki's performance is great, though) As an excuse to get these heroes together, this seems lame, the least inspired choice made by Weedon. The film is so strong in every other areas that it doesn't ruin the film. The tension between him and his brother Thor is a good character element, though. B) The locations are not very imaginative. The whole film is confined to the familiar areas of Manhattan, which seems uninspired to me.C) 3D adds nothing, as usual, it won't matter on the video release. I'm not sure if this one was short in 3D, or bumped up from 2D. It looked like the latter. This is disappointing, considering the strength of every other aspect of this movie. This film is worth your money and every buttered calorie of the popcorn you will be crunching. (If you like this sort of thing.)

If it's Tuesday, Clinton must be in Batumi

BATUMI, Georgia (Reuters) - If it's Tuesday, this must be Batumi.

A sunny day in early June finds U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in Georgia's Black Sea resort of Batumi, a beach town decidedly off the beaten path of high-level diplomacy.

The resort, with modern high-rise hotels contrasting with ornate, tsarist-era buildings, is the sixth stop in the seven countries that Clinton is visiting during an eight-day trip to Scandinavia, the Caucasus and Turkey.

In the final of the four years she says she will serve as secretary of state, Clinton had made time to tour the Arctic by boat, to dine in Copenhagen's Tivoli gardens and to visit this town on the Black Sea.

While renowned for her work ethic and mastery of detail, Clinton at times seems to be looking ahead to the next chapter of her life and willing to do things that she might not have done earlier in her tenure as secretary of state.

In the past few months, Clinton has gone whale-watching off the coast of Mexico, danced and drank beer at a bar in the Colombian Caribbean port of Cartagena and, in Norway on Saturday, took a two-hour cruise through the Arctic on a research trawler.

WAITING TO EXHALE

Work, however, follows her everywhere.

To take just one example, while en route to Denmark last week, Clinton called U.N. special envoy Kofi Annan from her plane to discuss the worsening crisis in Syria, in which government forces have killed more than 10,000 people, according to the United Nations.

In Copenhagen on Thursday, Clinton said she hankers to do ordinary things after two decades near the pinnacle of American politics.

"I would like to be able to just take a long walk," she told Danish students. "I'm just looking forward to exhaling and seeing what else lies ahead."

Asked if she could rule out running for U.S. president in 2016, she replied: "Yes." She unsuccessfully sought the Democratic nomination for president in 2008 in a tough battle against Barack Obama, who went on to win the presidency and then asked her to serve as his secretary of state.

The five nights that she spent during her current trip in Denmark, Norway and Sweden - countries with which the United States has few, if any, disagreements - was an unusual expenditure of time for a U.S. secretary of state.

Swedish diplomats told their American colleagues they believed it had been more than three decades since a U.S. secretary of state had come to Sweden just for bilateral talks rather than for an international conference or wider meeting.

At each stop in Scandinavia, Clinton warmly thanked the Nordic countries, known for their commitment to aid donations and their involvement in global challenges. Aides said Clinton made the visit to show her appreciation.

She also made time for a boat ride in each country.

She spent about half an hour cruising along Copenhagen's main canal with Denmark's foreign minister, taking in everything from the city's new black glass-enclosed royal theater to its iconic "little mermaid" statue.

At Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt's invitation, she spent about four hours in meetings aboard a small luxury boat, passing red Swedish summer cottages as well as stately mansions as they cruised among the Stockholm archipelago's rocky islands.

DISCUSSING SYRIA IN THE ARCTIC

To suggest that the boat rides were simply sightseeing would be unfair. On the Stockholm cruise, she held meetings with Bildt, who likes to show the archipelago's rugged beauty to visiting dignitaries, as well as with the Swedish defense minister.

After a day of talks with Norwegian officials in Oslo, Clinton flew to Norway's Arctic city of Tromso to highlight the strategic importance of the Arctic region.

The two hours that she spent cruising the local fjord getting briefings aboard a research vessel sought to illustrate the geopolitical significance of the Arctic as its ice melts and vast mineral resources and new shipping routes become available.

After getting off the boat, and before flying to Stockholm, Clinton spoke to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, again to discuss the violence in Syria.

From Sweden, Clinton flew to Armenia on Monday, urging it, and neighbor Azerbaijan, not to allow their long-standing territorial dispute to erupt into a regional conflagration. She is due to visit Azerbaijan on Wednesday.

In Georgia, she has diplomatically pressed the government to hold free and fair parliamentary elections.

Even the visit to Batumi, a resort town that is attracting five-star hotels and an investment from New York real estate mogul Donald Trump, has a foreign policy point.

Aides said the visit would dramatize the difference between the booming Georgian resort and the isolated towns in South Ossetia and Abkhazia, two Georgian enclaves over which Russia tightened its control after a five-day war in 2008.

She wraps up her trip in Istanbul for talks on Syria on Wednesday night and a counter-terrorism conference on Thursday before returning to Washington that night.

On Friday, she will hit the ground running, holding talks with Liberian President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, hosting a lunch for Philippine President Benigno Aquino and meeting Annan to discuss Syria.

Asked in January what she would do after she left the State Department, Clinton said it would probably be "a good idea to just find out how tired I am." She then added: "I will just work as hard as I can to the last minute."
