Robson struggles with celebrity as US Open run ends

British teenager Laura Robson's US Open journey suffered a gallant, fourth-round end at the hands of defending champion Samantha Stosur, leaving her to contemplate a new-found celebrity status.

Robson, who had knocked out three-time champion Kim Clijsters, a win which sent the Belgian into retirement, as well as 2011 French Open winner Li Na, saved eight match points Sunday before Stosur secured her place in the quarter-finals.

The Australian seventh seed triumphed 6-4, 6-4 in a tie which saw Robson, the youngest player in the top 100 and the first British woman to make the fourth round since Jo Durie in 1991, commit 41 unforced errors.

But the young Briton admitted that her defeats of Clijsters, a four-time Grand Slam title winner, as well as Chinese ninth seed Li have caused a few uncomfortable moments.

"This morning actually there was like a camera crew outside my hotel, which was a little bit freaky. I got really excited because I thought they were waiting for someone who was actually famous," said Robson.

"I've had loads of messages of support over the last few days. My phone has been running out of battery every few hours because there's been so many messages coming through. And especially on Twitter I've had loads of support."

Despite the plaudits she has received at coming close to being Britain's first women's Grand Slam quarter-finalist since 1988 -- six years before she was born -- she felt she could have performed better against the muscular Australian.

"Definitely disappointed. I felt like I didn't play as well as I did in my last three matches," she said.

"I just hit too many unforced errors. Sam is someone who sort of makes you feel like you're playing bad because she hits it with so much spin, so it's hard to get her serve back sometimes."

While Robson can expect to rise to around 75 in the world rankings -- from her current 89 -- Stosur goes on to face top seed, and Australian Open champion, Victoria Azarenka who she hasn't beaten in six meetings.

"I have not done well against her in the past. I think there's a few things I've learnt over those last few matches. Hopefully I can put all those into play and have a better match and hopefully a very good one," said Stosur.
