Chicago shooting: A case of 'mistaken identity'?

Hadiya Pendleton, a Chicago teenager, was shot on Tuesday by a bullet police believe was intended for someone else. Gun violence in Chicago appears to be on the rise. In the meantime, legislators discussed gun laws in Washington on Wednesday.

"Mistaken identity -- wrong place at the wrong time," Chicago?Police?Superintendent?Garry McCarthy?said at a press conference on Wednesday, a day after the shooting that killed?Hadiya Pendleton?and injured another teen. The press conference was broadcast by CLTV.

McCarthy said police have been interviewing witnesses who were standing near Pendleton in a park on the city's South Side. He said police were making progress in the investigation.

"I don't want this to be a three-week or a three-month investigation," said McCarthy, who was in Washington earlier this week addressing gun control. "I want this closed now ... I want that kid off the street," he said, referring to the killer. Police believe a handgun was used.

Pendleton, a sophomore at Martin Luther King Jr. College Prep, had performed at the inauguration with her school band, according to local media reports. News of her death near Obama's old home in the Kenwood neighborhood came before the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee began hearings on gun control on Wednesday.

Gun violence in Chicago?has been in the national spotlight over the past year, with 506 murders in 2012, an increase of 17 percent over the previous year. So far in January, there have been 42 homicides and 157 shootings, according to Chicago?police.

Obama spokesman?Jay Carney?was asked about Pendleton's death Wednesday. He said the prayers of the president and the first lady were with the girl's family.

"The president has more than once, when he talks about gun violence in American, referred not just to the horror of?Newtown?or?Aurora?or?Virginia Tech?or Oak Creek, but to shootings on the corner in Chicago?and other parts of the country," said Carney. "And this is just another example of the problem that we need to deal with."

McCarthy said that an $11,000 reward has been offered for information leading to the capture of Pendleton's killer.

Former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, shot in the head in a 2011 mass shooting, made an emotional plea before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday for action to curb U.S. gun violence, but a?National Rifle Association?executive said new gun laws have failed in the past and would fail again.

Giffords opened testimony at the first congressional hearing on gun violence since the Dec. 14 massacre in which a gunman shot dead 20 children and six adults at an elementary school in?Newtown,?Connecticut.

Responding to outrage across the country following that incident, Obama and other Democrats have asked?Congress?to pass the largest package of gun restrictions in decades.

Speaking at the news conference in Chicago, Father Michael Pfleger, a Catholic priest known for his activism against gun violence, compared the Chicago?shootings to?Newtown.

"This is?Sandy Hook. This is?Connecticut. This is?Newtown, right here. We have to be just as outraged," Pfleger said.

Japan industrial production up 2.5 percent in Dec.

Japan's industrial production picked up pace in December from the month before, in a sign the world's third-largest economy may be stabilizing thanks to stronger global demand and government spending.

Increased output of large passenger cars and vehicle components and machinery for making semiconductors were the main factors helping to drive the improvement in manufacturing, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry said Thursday. It said industrial output rose a seasonally adjusted 2.5 percent from November.

The government of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is already claiming progress in breaking the deflationary slump that has weighed on Japan's growth for years. Share prices are approaching three-year highs and many companies have reported improved profits thanks to a weakening of the Japanese yen against other major currencies

Since Abe took office on Dec. 26, his administration has pushed ahead with a 20 trillion yen ($220 billion) stimulus package, a hefty proposed budget for the coming fiscal year and a commitment by the central bank to unlimited monetary easing to help spur growth.

All that spending is meant to break the cycle of falling prices that is thought to be hindering business investment and hobbling growth.

"Generating enough demand to create a sustained recovery has been an uphill battle for policymakers," Moody's said in a commentary Thursday citing barriers to growth such as Japan's shrinking workforce and high savings rate. "Together, these moves could kick-start a recovery, assuming that stronger growth in Asia helps revive Japan's exports as well," it said.

Challenged by opposition lawmakers to explain how Japan can afford to boost spending when its national debt is already twice the size of the economy, Abe insisted his plan would balance the national budget by 2020. He also defended his administration's reliance on public works projects.

"I intend to have a deep discussion of the plans and seek public understanding to ensure transparency," Abe said during the televised legislative exchange.

Higher tax revenues are expected to help offset some of the increased spending: Earlier this week the government raised its forecast for economic growth in the fiscal year that starts April 1 to 2.5 percent from 1.7 percent.

While higher government spending can boost demand in the short run, growth can only be sustained through corporate investment, job creation and rising purchasing power.

Figures released by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare on Thursday, however, showed average monthly wages, including overtime and bonuses falling to 314,236 yen ($3,453), the lowest level since such data became available in 1990.

The ministry, which based the data on a survey of 33,000 companies, attributed the drop to the rising use of part-time or temporary workers, who accounted for nearly 29 percent of all workers in 2012.

December's increase in industrial output compared with a month-on-month drop of 1.4 percent in November. Most analysts had forecast an improvement of more than 4 percent in December.

METI said inventories fell 1.1 percent from the month before while shipments rose 4.4 percent.

New research in The FASEB Journal suggests that a network of steroid molecules found in the brain is disrupted during HIV infection, and treatment with the steroid DHEA-S prevents brain damage

Bethesda, MDA team of scientists from Canada, Thailand and Morocco have found that DHEA-S may prevent neurocognitive impairment that affects a significant percentage of AIDS patients. In a report appearing in the February 2013 issue of The FASEB Journal, they describe how a network of steroid molecules found in the brain, termed "neurosteroids," is disrupted during HIV infection leading to brain damage. This suggests that treatment with one of these steroid molecules, called DHEA-S, may offset the disruption caused by the virus to prevent or reduce brain damage.

"From these studies, we have gained a better understanding of how HIV injures the brain during AIDS, together with developing a new treatment approach for the resulting neurological disabilities arising from HIV/AIDS," said Christopher Power, M.D., co-author of this study from the Department of Medicine at the Medical Research Centre at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada.

To make their discovery, Power and colleagues initially found that neurosteroid enzyme levels were suppressed in the brains of people with HIV/AIDS and that a neurosteroid molecule, DHEA-S, prevented damage to cultured brain cells (neurons) caused by HIV. Then, using an animal model of AIDS, they showed that treatment with DHEA-S prevented neuronal damage in the brain by reducing the adverse effects of HIV. Neurosteroids have already been proposed as treatments for epilepsy, head injury, post-traumatic stress disorder and depression, and these findings extend the potential treatment applications for neurosteroid-related molecules.

"Most people know that AIDS wreaks total havoc on our immune systems," said Gerald Weissmann, M.D., Editor-in-Chief of The FASEB Journal, "but far fewer people know that the disease can also lead to noticeable brain damage. This research study offers an explanation why this occurs as well as a possible solution for preventing it. The next steps, of course, involve looking into whether or not people will benefit from some form of DHEA-S treatment."

Pentax expands ruggedized series with Optio WG-3, Target-exclusive WG-10

Pentax expands ruggedized series with Optio WG3, Targetexclusive WG10

Think it might be time for a new ruggedized Pentax? It looks like the company agrees -- two new models are making their debut this week at CP+. The first is actually a rebranded WG-1, now called the WG-10, which will be available exclusively at Target stores and the website beginning in April. It's identical to the WG-1, save for the obligatory red finish and a $180 price tag. The second model is more of an original number -- it's an update to last year's WG-2. The new compact, dubbed the WG-3, maintains the unique design of the other two Optios, including a nifty LED ring around the lens for lighting macro shots.

There's a 16-megapixel, 1/2.3-inch BSI CMOS sensor, a 3-inch 460k-dot LCD, a 4x lens with an f/2 wide-angle maximum aperture, along with options for 1080/30p and 720/60p video capture. It's waterproof to 14 meters (46 feet), shockproof to 2 meters (6.5 feet) and freeze-proof to -10 degrees Celsius (14 degrees Fahrenheit). The basic version will run you $300, while a tricked-out $350 model adds GPS and Qi wireless charging, along with a secondary LCD that displays the current time, barometric pressure, a compass, altitude and underwater depth. Blast at sorcerer's house caused by explosives

HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) ? Police in Zimbabwe said Wednesday they found traces of explosives at a tribal sorcerer's house where a massive blast killed six people and damaged 12 nearby buildings.

Police official Charity Charamba said the sorcerer and assistants, one of them a former police officer, were suspected of trying to extract a compound of mercury sometimes used in the manufacture of explosive materials.

Five people, including the sorcerer, often referred to in the West as a witchdoctor, died on the spot on a township street outside Harare on Jan. 21 and the sixth died later. Neighbors at first feared the explosion was a traditional ritual to produce a deadly lightning bolt meant to strike down enemies or evil spirits.

Charamba said mercury compounds known locally as "red mercury" are often thought to fetch huge prices on illegal markets.

In recent months, police have been investigating three cases of people attempting to open the casing of explosive devices. In one, a man lost fingers when a grenade he was tampering with exploded. In eastern Zimbabwe, two suspects were arrested trying to sell mortar bombs.

"Those selling were claiming that the mortar bomb contains mercury which fetches a lot of money on the black market and they can become millionaires overnight. Possession of explosives is illegal and they are highly dangerous," Charamba said.

Many impoverished Zimbabweans believe "red mercury," which is not an accurate scientific term for explosive mercury derivatives, can sell for up to $300,000 a kilogram (2.2 pounds).

After the explosion in Chitungwiza, 25 kilometers (15 miles) south of Harare, panicked neighbors spread coarse salt around the site, an ancient tribal remedy to ward off avenging spirits.

Zimbabwe's local media has conjured with a range of theories on the potency of traditional African sorcery since the township explosion.

A survivor claimed it was an exorcism gone wrong. Clara Banda told reporters she was part of a group of tribal healers tasked with destroying a mystical creature, commonly known as a goblin, used to enhance the fortunes of the businessman who died on the scene.

She said the sorcerer was offered $15,000 by the businessman to kill the goblin which he claimed was making "extreme demands" on him and even threatened his safety.

The sorcerer, the businessman and his helpers told her the goblin had to be beheaded. But she heard the sorcerer cry out that the goblin was fighting back, and then there was the explosion, the state media quoted her saying.

The Zimbabwe National Traditional Healers Association, an organization of tribal healers, said the possibility of it being a "cleansing ceremony" that "wasn't done in the proper manner" could not be ruled out by highly superstitious followers of centuries-old African cultural beliefs.

Sometimes inflammable concoctions are used in rituals and tribal healers need to be vetted and properly qualified to perform such cleansing ceremonies, said ZINATHA spokesman George Kandiero.

The dead sorcerer was identified as Speakmore Mandere, a dreadlocked 24-year-old.

"We need to clear people to perform such rituals and we have to look at whether the person is qualified for something of that magnitude," Kandiero told The AP. "We need to bring these people to book; they are bringing our name into disrepute."

Social anthropologist Watch Ruparanganda of the University of Zimbabwe said belief in witchcraft is deeply rooted in Zimbabwean culture.

In Zimbabwe's mystic realm, a goblin may exact revenge on its owner if it had made him rich and then he wanted to discard it without fulfilling his part of the bargain by honoring its demands for sacrificial offerings including human blood, he said.

"People must not pretend they don't know about black magic," Ruparanganda. "We know witchcraft is there in our society, it is undisputable."

The 10th anniversary of the Columbia disaster is felt particularly keenly in Israel. The disaster took the life of Ilan Ramon, Israel's first astronaut, who was among the crew of the last flight of the space shuttle Columbia.

Various events are being conducted in Israel and by Israelis to commemorate the disaster.

Israel opens space and science center in Herzliya

According to the Jewish Press, NASA administrator Charles Bolden was on hand to commemorate the establishment of a space and science center in the Israeli town of Herzliya, in Galilee between the Haifa coast and the Kinneret. The center is currently engaged in the processing and tracking of Israeli satellites as well as the education of local students. Bolden was one of 14 space agency heads who were present for the occasion, which also kicked off a several-day "space week" in the Jewish state, according to the Times of Israel. Bolden suggested that the next Israeli astronaut would likely be included in one of NASA's planned deep space missions and not on a mission to the International Space Station, since Israel is not a partner in the ISS.

Israeli students visit the Florida space coast

Florida Today reports that a group of Israeli students and their teachers visited the Kennedy Space Center and other destinations on the Florida space coast on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the loss of Columbia. All attend the same school that Ilan Ramon attended. Because of Ramon's sacrifice, there is an upsurge in interest on aerospace subjects in Israel.

Israeli space program

A recent article in Space Quarterly notes that Israel's space effort has largely been military-driven, with a number of reconnaissance and communications satellites launched from a base on the Mediterranean coast, To avoid diplomatic complications with its neighbors, some of them still hostile, Israel launches its satellites in a westerly, retrograde orbit. Israel is currently searching for a foreign launch site to lease in order to launch larger payloads in the traditional easterly direction that takes advantage of the rotation of the Earth.

Unlike its main Middle Eastern enemy, Iran, Israel has not expressed any ambitions for its own native crewed space program. A private Israeli group is a competitor for the Google Lunar X Prize for the first private rover to land on the lunar surface. In the meantime Israel is starting to slowly ramp up a civil space effort, leveraging agreements with other space agencies such as NASA and the European Space Agency.

Dems agree on candidate to challenge NJ's Christie

(AP) ? You might not have heard of New Jersey state Sen. Barbara Buono, though you've probably heard of the man she's itching to take on in the November election ? Gov. Chris Christie.

Expect to hear more about her. Buono picked up endorsements Tuesday from the Democratic Governors' Association, southern New Jersey's seven county Democratic Party chairs and the southern legislative delegation, thereby sewing up enough support statewide to become the Democrats' presumptive nominee for governor.

She will be a serious underdog against Christie, who has the benefits of incumbency, greater name recognition and the ability to raise however much he needs to run a re-election campaign.

Christie, 50, saw his popularity soar after Superstorm Sandy, but Buono says New Jersey's problems of high unemployment and high taxes existed before the late-October storm.

Buono, a 59-year-old senator from Metuchen on the fringe of the New York City area, was the first major Democrat to enter the race, but establishment Democrats were slow to back her bid to challenge Christie. Their first choice, Newark Mayor Cory Booker, opted to run for U.S. Senate in 2014 instead of facing Christie.

"I was always confident the party would come together," Buono said. "This election is too important ? it's about having someone who stands up for working New Jerseyans and the working poor who have been forgotten by this governor. We're mounting an aggressive campaign to take the Statehouse back for the middle class."

Buono has raised more than $200,000 but needs $380,000 to qualify for public matching funds. Christie has already pulled in $2 million, and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg is hosting a fundraiser for him in California next month.

The chairman of the Democratic Governors Association, Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin, outlined the themes of Buono's campaign.

"Barbara Buono understands the challenges facing New Jersey's middle class because she's lived through them. She's spent her entire career fighting to create jobs, improve education, expand access to quality health care and balance budgets," Shumlin said.

Senate President Stephen Sweeney and Assembly Majority Leader Lou Greenwald signed a letter pledging "to tirelessly fight to elect Barbara Buono as our next governor" because of her track record as a champion of the state's most vulnerable residents. Sweeney until recently talked about possibly joining the race.

State Sen. Dick Codey, of Essex County in the state's north, also threw his support behind Buono. Until Friday, Codey was flirting with his own run for governor. He was acting governor for 14 months after Jim McGreevey resigned in 2004, but he decided against running for an elected term.

Buono had received key endorsements on Monday from Reps. Frank Pallone and Bill Pascrell Jr., who was also courted as a candidate, and party chairs in the New York-area counties of Bergen, Passaic and Hudson.

Taking the governor's seat away from Christie, who has among the highest profiles of any Republican in the country, would be a huge prize for both the state and national Democratic parties. But Republicans were underwhelmed by the prospect of Buono.

"After failing to recruit their first, second, third or fourth choice candidates into the campaign for governor, Democrats have finally settled on state Sen. Barbara Buono," said Mike Schrimpf, spokesman for the Republican Governors Association.

Mike Duhaime, Christie's political adviser, said the governor's "record of leadership cannot be matched."

Buono's campaign officially kicks off in New Brunswick on Saturday. Christie's starts with a fundraiser in New Brunswick on Monday.

Hostess picks Little Debbie maker for Drake's

(AP) ? Hostess has picked the maker of Little Debbie as the lead bidder for its Drake's cakes.

According to a filing in U.S. bankruptcy court, McKee Foods has offered $27.5 million in cash for the cake brands, which include Devil Dogs, Funny Bones and Yodels. The fate of Twinkies and other Hostess cakes are still being negotiated with other bidders.

Hostess also said United States Bakery agreed to pay $28.9 million for its remained bread brands, which include Sweetheart, Eddy's, Standish Farms and Grandma Emilie's. That offer includes four bakeries, 14 depots and equipment. Earlier this month, Hostess picked Flowers Foods, which makes Tastykake and Nature's Own and Bunny bread, as the lead bidder for six of its major bread brands, including Wonder.

The "stalking horse" bid by McKee Foods would set the floor for an auction process that lets competitors make better offers. A judge would have to approve the final sale, which Hostess said is scheduled to close no later than May 30.

McKee's bid includes some equipment but not the Drake's bakery in Wayne, N.J. A spokesman for Hostess, Tom Becker, said the company continues "to market all remaining assets."

McKee Foods, based in Collegedale, Tenn., makes a variety of snack cakes under the Little Debbie banner that compete with Hostess cakes at a lower price. For example, its Cloud Cakes resemble Twinkies and its Devil Cremes resemble Devil Dogs. A representative for McKee Foods, Mike Gloekler, said the company didn't plan to scrap any brands as a result of the deal.

"Our intent is to produce like products as they are since they have different packaging and formulae," Gloekler said in a statement. He said McKee hoped to make Drake's products at its plant in Stuarts Draft, Va. since Drake's cakes are best known in the northeast region.

Hostess has said in court previously that it needed to move quickly in selling off its brands to capitalize on the outpouring of nostalgia and media coverage prompted by its demise. The company repeated the sentiment in its court filing Monday, noting that there is no advertising or marketing for Drake's brands, which also include Ring Dings, Sunny Doodles and Yankee Doodles.

"The longer Drake's products stay off the shelves, the more likely it is that consumers will begin to use competitors' products," the filing said.

McKee generates about $1.1 billion in sales a year, with its Little Debbie cake division accounting for $800 million of that, according to the company. In recent years, McKee has seen its sales remain flat or fall as eating habits have changed.

Hostess Brands Inc., based in Irving, Texas, has been plagued by even greater problems. The company announced in November that it was shutting down its business and selling its breads and snack cakes. Its demise came after years of management turmoil and turnover, with workers saying the company failed to invest its brands. Hostess filed for its second Chapter 11 bankruptcy in less than a decade this January, citing costs associated with its unionized workforce.

After declaring that it was going out of business, Hostess had solicited bids for its brands by a Dec. 10 deadline. The company said in its filing Monday that it had received one bid for "substantially all" of its assets. But Hostess said the bid was not as valuable as the combined total for of the bids it received for individual brands. In addition, Hostess said the bidder that made the offer for conducted "very limited diligence."

A week into his second term, President Barack Obama is temporarily turning from perpetual political fights over the national debt, government borrowing, spending and taxing to tackle two other big issues: immigration and gun-law overhaul.

With Congress delaying a debt limit showdown until May 18, the White House postponing its annual budget submission until March and House Speaker John Boehner struggling to maintain Republican unity, this could be the time to strike.

National public opinion polls show a majority of Americans now support easing immigration laws and tightening federal gun restrictions.

That's not to say either fight will be easy. Both immigration and guns remain hot-button issues in Congress

The president met Monday with police chiefs from three towns that experienced mass shootings in 2012: Aurora, Colo.; Oak Creek, Wis., and Newton, Conn. "We recognize that this is an issue that elicits a lot of passion all across the country," Obama said.

He hopes public outrage over recent shootings strengthens his hand on curbing gun violence.

Meanwhile, a bipartisan Senate group Monday presented a new framework for overhauling the nation's immigration laws, including a path to citizenship for the 11 million illegal immigrants already here. Obama presses his case for immigration-law changes Tuesday in Las Vegas.

The White House also believes the political math of last November's election ? in which Obama won overwhelming Hispanic support ? helped soften GOP opposition to liberalizing immigration laws.

"What's changed, honestly, is that there is a new ... appreciation on both sides of the aisle ? including maybe more importantly on the Republican side of the aisle ? that we have to enact a comprehensive immigration reform bill," Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., said Sunday on ABC.

Even so, the new Senate immigration proposal could face strong opposition in the Republican-controlled House.

And despite growing public support for gun curbs, the pro-gun lobby remains a potent force.

Samsung expects Music Hub to reach competitors' devices, more countries

Samsung Music Hub

Samsung's Music Hub has only had a comparatively small reach to date, delivering tunes to seven countries (six with scan-and-match) and just a handful of devices. Senior VP of Media Services TJ Kang expects the audio service to broaden its horizons -- he tells The Next Web that Samsung wants to widen access to rivals' gear as well. There's no convenient timetable to put on the calendar, but the expansion is a significant move for a service that's frequently seen as more of a brand-specific checklist feature than a full competitor with the likes of Google Music or iTunes. Plans for Samsung's own devices are more definite, Kang says. Music Hub is coming to more countries in 2013, as long as licensing deals work out, and further device support (including the non-mobile variety) will depend on flagship hardware releases scattered throughout the year. No matter where Media Hub heads next, it's safe to presume that it will be more than just a nice bonus in the near future.

Box Office Guru Wrapup: Hansel & Gretel Hunt Their Way to #1

This weekend, the horror-action combo Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters led a sluggish North American box office with a moderate debut that was more than enough to capture the number one spot. Two other new releases, Jason Statham's action film Parker and the raunchy comedy Movie 43, failed to attract much business, helping the overall marketplace lose steam. The top ten was filled with four Academy Award nominees for Best Picture, a handful of underperforming January releases, and an unusually high total of eight R-rated films.

Paramount captured the top spot with its Jeremy Renner vehicle Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters which grossed an estimated $19M this weekend. The R-rated story about the fairy tale siblings as hired guns in their adult years averaged a decent $5,635 from 3,372 locations with 55% of the gross coming from 3D screens.

Though not especially impressive, Hansel attracted respectable business and hopes to see better figures from international markets. Studio research showed that the crowd was 55% male and 57% 25 and older. The majority of films in the top ten appeal to adult males so competition was tough. Reviews were mostly negative for the $50M production which was co-financed with MGM. The opening weekend turnout was about even with that of last summer's period mash-up pic Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter which bowed to $16.3M and a similar $5,247 average with its R rating, 3D surcharges, and nearly identical demographic breakdown.

Last week's number one film Mama fell to second place with an estimated $12.9M after dropping 55%, an understandable decline for a supernatural thriller. Universal's $15M pic has grossed a solid $48.6M in ten days and should end near the $70M mark. Part of Mama's success has come from its PG-13 rating as all other films in the top nine this weekend were rated R.

Enjoying the best hold by far for any wide release was Oscar contender Silver Linings Playbook which eased only 7% to an estimated $10M pushing the cume up to a robust $69.5M. The Bradley Cooper-Jennifer Lawrence hit is well on its way to smashing the $100M mark and could go much higher if it remains durable over the weeks ahead. Rival Best Picture nominee Zero Dark Thirty ranked fourth with an estimated $9.8M, off 38%. The Sony release has collected a sturdy $69.9M to date.

Jason Statham's latest effort didn't excite too many moviegoers. The action star's Parker bowed to an estimated $7M from 2,224 theaters for a weak $3,147 average putting it on the lower end of the actor's standard opening weekend range. Statham continues to head up action projects -- usually with low budgets -- but routinely opens films below the $10M mark when anchoring on his own. Parker debuted a bit below the $7.9M of Safe from last year and the $9.4M of Killer Elite from 2011. Its CinemaScore grade was a decent B+. Overseas results and home video revenue should help to cover the costs down the road.

Giving film critics something to completely tear apart, Relativity saw almost no turnout for its raunchy comedy Movie 43 which flopped in a tie for sixth place with only an estimated $5M from 2,023 theaters for a weak $2,472 average. The R-rated picture with 12 credited directors boasted an impressive cast of actors including Oscar winners Halle Berry and Kate Winslet, current Academy Award nominees Hugh Jackman and Naomi Watts, plus many other notable stars like Gerard Butler, Emma Stone, Richard Gere, Dennis Quaid, and Terrence Howard.

Produced by Peter Farrelly and featuring numerous short films strung together with a main plot, Movie 43 is already generating plenty of heat for next year's awards season -- for the Razzies, that is. The cheap $6M film earned a dismal D grade from moviegoers polled by CinemaScore. The audience was 51% male and 59% under 25.

The Weinstein Co. saw its other major Oscar contender Django Unchained fall 36% to an estimated $5M pushing the cume up to a stellar $146.3M. A strong $42.9M international weekend put the Quentin Tarantino pic at $111.5M overseas for a sturdy global gross of $257.8M. Fellow period pic Gangster Squad dropped 51% to an estimated $4.2M and has given Warner Bros. $39.6M to date.

After a weak bow, Broken City fell 52% in its second weekend to an estimated $4M putting Fox at just $15.3M after ten days. The blockbuster musical Les Mis?rables rounded out the top ten with an estimated $3.9M, down 48%, and a domestic tally of $137.2M. Universal has amassed $312.9M worldwide so far.

Overseas, Skyfall finally opened in China last Monday and generated a stunning $34.4M in the first seven days thanks to the widest release ever for that country with 8,000+ screens. The international total stands at $776.5M and will break $800M soon. The global gross is a towering $1.08 billion and the latest Bond will soon surpass The Dark Knight Rises for number seven on the all-time worldwide mega-blockbusters list.

The top ten films grossed an estimated $80.8M which was down 12% from last year when The Grey opened at number one with $19.7M; and down 8% from 2011 when The Rite debuted in the top spot with $14.8M.

(AP) ? There was no fire alarm. There were no sprinklers or fire escapes. And when a band member tried to put out a fire that had been started by pyrotechnics, the extinguisher didn't work.

All the elements were in place for the tragedy at the Kiss nightclub early Sunday. The result was the world's worst fire of its kind in more than a decade, with 231 people dead and this southern Brazilian college town in shock and mourning.

Funerals began on Monday, as reports continued to emerge about the accumulation of neglect and errors at the packed night spot.

According to state safety codes here, clubs should have one fire extinguisher every 1,500 square feet as well as multiple emergency exits. Limits on the number of people admitted are to be strictly respected. None of that appears to have happened at the Santa Maria nightclub.

"A problem in Brazil is that there is no control of how many people are admitted in a building," said Joao Daniel Nunes, a civil engineer in nearby Porto Alegre. "They never are clearly stated, and nobody controls how many people enter these night clubs."

Santa Maria's mayor, Jose Fortunati, told Radio Gaucha that dozens of night spots were closed last year for failing to meet norms.

"At that time, we had lots of protest from those who frequented them, but I think that today people understand it better and that at times hard stands must be taken so that steps are taken to not put people's lives at risk," Fortunati said.

Brazilian police said they detained three people in connection with the blaze, while the newspaper O Globo said on its website that a fourth person had surrendered to police. Police Inspector Ranolfo Vieira Junior said the detentions were part of the ongoing police probe and those detained can be held for up to five days.

Vieira declined to identify those detained, but the Brazilian newspaper Zero Hora quotes lawyer Jader Marques saying his client Elissandro Spohr, a co-owner of the club, had been held. Globo reported that the fourth person detained was another club co-owner. G1, Globo Television's internet portal, reported that Spohr acknowledged the club's operating license was not up to date but said the pyrotechnics show started the blaze.

Zero Hora said police also detained two members of the band. The band's guitarist told Brazilian media he saw flames lick the ceiling after the group's spark machine was deployed.

More than 100 people remained hospitalized for smoke, local officials said.

National Health Minister Alexandre Padilha cautioned that the death toll could worsen dramatically. Speaking to media in Santa Maria, he said that 75 of those injured were in critical condition and could die.

However, Paulo Afonso Beltrame, a doctor helping coordinate the emergency response, said he was optimistic at least some of those injured would pull through.

"It's impossible to predict what will happen, because they are all in a very delicate state, but there's hope for all of them," said Beltrame, adding that more than 40 survivors had been sent to neighboring cities for treatment of burns and smoke inhalation. "One of the problems we're having here is that all these people need to be on respirators and we don't have enough respirators in the city."

The event raises questions of whether Brazilian authorities are up to the task of ensuring safety in such venues ahead of it hosting next year's World Cup and the 2016 Olympics.

Some critics have said conditions in many Brazilian bars and clubs are ripe for another deadly blaze. In addition to modernizing sometimes outdated safety codes and ensuring sufficient inspectors, people have to change their way of thinking and respect safety regulations.

Funeral services were held for several of the 231 victims, most of them college students 18 to 21 years old. Some of the victims were minors. Most died from smoke inhalation rather than burns.

Witnesses said security guards who didn't know about the blaze initially blocked people from leaving without paying their bills. Brazilian bars routinely make patrons pay their entire tab at the end of the night before they're allowed to leave. Many of the dead were found in the club's two bathrooms, where the blinding smoke caused them to believe the doors were exits.

Rodrigo Martins, a guitarist for the group Gurizada Fandangueira, told Globo TV network in an interview Monday that the flames broke out minutes after the deployment of a pyrotechnic machine that fans out colored sparks, at around 2:30 a.m. local time.

"I felt that something was falling from the roof and I looked up and I saw the fire was spreading, and I shouted 'Look, it's catching on fire, man, it's catching fire,'" Martins said. "Then the drummer tried to throw water on it, and it looked like the fire spread more then. Then the security guards came with an extinguisher, tried to use it, but it didn't work."

He added that the club was packed and estimated the crowd at about 1,200-1,300 people.

"I thought I was going to die there. There was nothing I could do, with the fire spreading and people screaming in front."

Martins confirmed that the group's accordion player Danilo Jacques, 28, died, while the five other band members made it out safely. Martins said he thought Jacques made it out of the building and later returned to save his accordion.

Martins said the group nearly always used the so-called Sputnik pyrotechnics machine and that it had never before caused any problem, even in smaller venues. An electrical short circuit could also possibly have been to blame for the fire, he suggested.

Still, police were leaning toward the pyrotechnics as the likely cause of the tragedy. Police inspector Antonio Firmino, who's part of the team investigating Sunday's blaze, said it appeared the club's ceiling was covered with an insulating foam made from a combustible material that ignited with the pyrotechnics. He said the number and state of the exits is under investigation but that it appeared that a second door was "inadequate," as it was small and protected by bars that wouldn't open.

Television images from Santa Maria showed black smoke billowing out of the Kiss nightclub as shirtless young men who attended the university party joined firefighters using axes and sledgehammers to pound at the hot-pink exterior walls, trying to reach those trapped inside. Teenagers sprinted from the scene after the fire began, desperately seeking help. Others carried injured and burned friends away in their arms. About half of those killed were men, and another half women.

The party was organized by students from several academic departments at the Federal University of Santa Maria. Such organized university parties are common throughout Brazil.

"This shook the whole town," said Ocimar Franco, neighbor of fire victim Taize Santos, before her funeral Monday. "I feel the whole world is watching our town. I wish it were for another reason."

Among the dead were also brothers Pedro and Marcelo Salla, who were both buried Monday.

Beltrame said he was told the club had been filled far beyond its capacity, and the crowds and thickness of the smoke made it hard for people to find their way out.

"Large amounts of toxic smoke quickly filled the room, and I would say that at least 90 percent of the victims died of asphyxiation," Beltrame said. "The toxic smoke made people lose their sense of direction so they were unable to find their way to the exit. At least 50 bodies were found inside a bathroom."

Beltrame said people who were inside the club and thought they made it out safely have started to turn up at area hospitals with symptoms of smoke inhalation, which he said can take hours or even days to appear. He estimated that around 15 people have sought out help in the past few hours and said some have had to be intubated.

Santa Maria Mayor Cezar Schirmer declared a 30-day mourning period, and Tarso Genro, the governor of the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul, said officials were investigating the cause of the disaster.

The blaze was the deadliest in Brazil since at least 1961, when a fire that swept through a circus killed 503 people in Niteroi, Rio de Janeiro.

Sunday's fire also appeared to be the worst at a nightclub anywhere in the world since December 2000, when a welding accident reportedly set off a fire at a club in Luoyang, China, killing 309 people.
