5 Ways to Make Your Health & Fitness Goal a Reality | Manilla Blog

It?s 2013! Play the trumpets, throw the confetti, and jot down your health and fitness goals. This time, though, I want you to create the goals so that they become a reality. (Yes, you can do it!) You have the ability to make changes and let 2013 become your healthiest year yet. Here?s how to do it.

1. Ingrain the phrase, ?Your time is NOW,? into your brain. The only thing in life you don?t get back is time, so put the excuses aside and start now. Don?t look back, but instead look forward. Yes, you may have been a collegiate athlete who played division 1 basketball, but time has passed. Now, you are 30+ years old, working 40+ hours each week, and trying to be social, as well. Don?t compare yourself to who you were before ? life happens and time goes on. Focus on the present. Look forward and make goals to become the most strong, healthy, athletic, and energetic person you can be?NOW. Embrace all of your life?s events, and use the experiences to make you more dedicated and focused in your goals.

2. Make a year?s health and fitness goal chart within the first week of 2013. Look on the calendar and break down the year with goals for each month. Then break it down one step further and write down weekly goals. You are creating attainable smaller goals that will gradually become part of your lifestyle. Think smaller goals each week, such as:

  • Drink 8 ounces of water every morning before having a cup of coffee
  • Exercise three times a week before work for 30 minutes (60 minutes if you are active already)
  • Use the stairs at work instead of the elevator
  • Turn off technology by 8 p.m., go to bed at 10 p.m., and wake up at 6 am
  • Prep gym bag and healthy lunch the night before

When you set big goals instead of huge ones (like to lose 50 pounds, run a marathon ? for a non-runner ? or eat clean at every meal), you?re setting up for failure. We don?t want that! You want to take small lifestyle changing steps.

3. Register for races. Try signing up for races in March, June, September and December, or think quarterly, and register for at least four events this year. It may sound daunting, but when you register, you are committed to the event. Nobody wants to spend money on things they can?t afford. Visit Active.com to see a myriad of races. Start small with 5Ks, or 5K mud runs, and end the year with triathlons, a 10K, and possibly a half marathon or marathon. You have the ability to do it!

4. Create your own fitness team. Your goals are set, so seek out a team to support you. It could be friends at the gym, the program Team in Training, a boot camp, zumba classes, a cycling group, or your best friends who become your workout buddies. I encourage you to surround yourself with likeminded friends, who will support your goals and not pull you down. When you are training with others, it has been proven to be 45 percent more effective at ensuring you reach your fitness goals. Why? Accountability.

5. Understand that setbacks will happen, but keep lacing up and moving forward.?If you have a bad day or a bad week, it doesn?t mean you throw in the towel and quit. It means you become stronger than the excuses, and lace up to get started again. Each day, week, and month that you stay focused to reaching your goals is ensuring that they will not come to a halt with the arrival of 2014, but instead be part of your life and who you are. You have the ability to make changes ? and your time is NOW!
