The $110 million DaVita world headquarters building in downtown Denver on Thursday was named both the ?Overall Project of the Year? as well as the ?Office Property of the Year? at one of the largest and most prestigious gatherings of commercial real estate officials in Denver.
The DaVita project in the Central Platte Valley at 2000 16th St. was lauded at the 18th annual Rocky Mountain Commercial Real Estate Expo and Fall Forecast sponsored by the University of Denver Denver Franklin L. Burns School of Real Estate and Construction Management.
The conference, which drew about 1,000 commercial real estate brokers, developers and lenders, is in partnership with the Denver Metro Commercial Association of Realtors. The all-day event was held at the Colorado Convention Center.
The awards recognize outstanding accomplishments in architectural design, site planning, creativity, as well as project impact on the industry, economy and the community as a whole.
?This year?s honorees represent a truly diverse, creative and talented group of companies and individuals,? said Mark Levine, professor at the Burns School of Real Estate and Construction Management at DU and chair of the Project of the Year Committee. ?We?re delighted to have the opportunity to recognize these projects as a representation of the quality and growth of our commercial real estate market.?

Following are details and judges comments on each of the winners:
- The DaVita headquarters is an owner-financed, 14-story, 260,000-square-foot building of glass, metal and stone that houses one of the world?s leaders in kidney care.?About 950 Davita employees work in the building that features several open-air terraces. Construction was completed in August 2012 on time and under budget.?It was developed by the Trammell Crow Co., under the direction of Bill Mosher. MOA architecture designed it and it was built by the Saunders Construction Co.
Hotel Project of the Year: The Hotel and Hospitality Learning Center at Metropolitan State University of Denver
- The Hotel and Hospitality Learning Center at Metropolitan State University of Denver offers the community two assets: a fully functioning hotel ? Springhill Suites Denver Downtown, and an extensive?learning laboratory for a diverse and growing body of hospitality students. Located west of the corner of Speer Boulevard and Auraria Parkway, the $45 million hotel includes 150 hotel rooms, as well as conference facilities.
The learning center offers more than 28,000 square feet of academic space, including classrooms, specialty learning labs and faculty offices. The hotel is operated by hotel management firm, Sage Hospitality, and provides hands-on training opportunities for students in MSU Denver?s hospitality, tourism and events department. It opened in August 2012.

?Special Project of the Year: History Colorado Center
- The History Colorado Center, which opened in April, features a four-story central atrium, five exhibit halls totaling 40,000 square feet, including an 11,000-square- foot hall with humidification and temperature controls that meet the certification of Smithsonian exhibit criteria, an auditorium, three classrooms and three multi-purpose event spaces, one with an outdoor terrace.
The center also includes 38,000 square feet of offices, a high-density collection storage area totaling 15,000 square feet, a public library, workshops and photo studio. The center?s lobby includes a caf? and gift shop.

Multi-Family Project of the Year: Alta Aspen Grove
- The 280-unit Alta Aspen Grove apartment development is ?on 17.5 acres at 7317 South Platte River Parkway in Littleton. The project is nestled among a nature preserve, a bicycle greenway path and a light rail station and is immediately adjacent to the upscale Aspen Grove shopping center. The gated, garden-style community of two- and three-story buildings offers one-, two- and three-bedroom floor plans ranging from 695 to 1,491 square feet.

Historic Renovation Project of the Year ?The Mining Exchange ?Wyndham Grand Hotel, Colorado Springs
- This five-story building in the heart of downtown Colorado Springs, was originally constructed in 1902 by Winfield Scott Stratton, the Cripple Creek millionaire and civic benefactor. The remodel was focused on keeping the history of the 110-year-old building, including converting 17 fully-functioning safes into functioning parts of the renovated hotel. The $30 million renovation helped make this historic building a new centerpiece for the city.
