During Tropical Storm Irene, the South Shore pond exploded into the Atlantic Ocean and ultimately compromised some of the Prince's Bay beach.
At the end of Holton Avenue in Prince's Bay, Wolfe's Pond appeared
somewhat different at the end of last week, but not by much. The gap bordering the beach and ocean contained some birds and water left behind by Sandy. Some trees were downed near the once-filled freshwater pond, including a still-intact tiny bridge that connected part of the park to the shore.
Two boats, likely from the nearby Princess Bay Boatmens Association property, were spotted on the beach.
"It's better than I thought it would be," said neighborhood native Sherri Zuckerman, who admitted she would've felt horrible if the beach took any major impact.
Ms. Zuckerman, now a New Jersey resident, visits the beach, sometimes once a month, when she comes to Staten Island to see her family.
She called it a special place that's been visited since her childhood.
Longtime neighborhood resident Robin Miller said it'll likely take a long time for the pond to be fully repaired, especially because of other damages sustained on Staten Island and throughout the city from the most recent storm.
